[ At the risk of being a bit OT, it continues to amaze me that more people going from Norristown to CC don't switch over to the NHSL. Even with the current (and unexplained) service reductions it still runs more often, equals/beats RRD times, and following the 01/01 fare "simplification"*...
I am rather frustrated by the changes to the Norristown Line's morning trains. We are having two of our three current morning express trains downgraded to glorified local trains (the 7:30-ish and 8:00-ish trains from Elm Street).
Keep in mind the current plan is for the Pope to only be here for the weekend. It won't be like the Phillies parade where there's a bunch of regular commuters in the way. SEPTA will probably run a modified schedule saturday and sunday, but I very much doubt we'll see any special service off the curr...
Interestingly, the preliminary plans for one of these bridges - Miami Street in east Toledo - shows the north abutment being modified to allow for what the design calls "future track"; see page 22 or 46 of: http://toledo.oh.gov/media/111552/luc-miami_st_bridge_stage_2__prel_row_plans.pdf&...
Was this one of the now OOS sidings across Markley St? I don't think so. It looks like the video is taken under the Airy Street bridge. According to the Conrail Philadelphia Division ZTS map Volume 3, Zone 35, page 10, the matlack sidings were the two non-SEPTA sidings at Elm Street Station (now mo...
I've been seeing conductors selling Independence Passes on-board. I don't think they surcharge them either. I can confirm this. I've bought several independence passes on the train in the last couple months with no surcharge. Also, I like CNJGeep's recommended itinerary with the Rt. 102 component.
I was at Pottstown Saturday hoping for some trains going past old Reading station. I got ONE (empty coal) in 90+mins. Anybody know how many trains run this line on Saturdays and Sundays? Like to go back there and also to Valley Forge when weather gets warmer.I would have figured on seeing more than...
The valuation maps indicate that like most railroads, the Newtown line was acquired in a myriad of ways, many difficult to trace now 150 years later. You would have to look up the deeds each railroad parcel refers to for complete understanding, a massive, tedious undertaking. A particularly amusing ...
Won't happen. Collectively as a population we seem to be handed shorter and shorter names for things: KFC for example, not Kentucky Fried Chicken. The History Channel's logo is just "H". Etc. This is not new to the railroad industry, of course. Consider: - The Pennsylvania Railroad, often...
How about the old RDG Reading to Philly main line? How many trains can you get there? Where are best places ? Still wondering about this. I really want to get action on the old Reading mainline.Weather has messed up plans lately but hoping that changes soon. My favorite spot is the old Port Kennedy...
Wow. I've seen the SLIV seats before, but never the M4 seats. They look weird in the M4. The pictures do not adequately convey what a mess those seats usually were, especially the M4 seats. My habit of always standing on the El originates with them frequently being badly stained or "deflated&q...
Similar signs in black and white have always been posted at crossings (or at least, have been for the last couple decades), although these sound like newer, more visible ones. If you write down the unique crossing identifier, you can enter it here: http://safetydata.fra.dot.gov/OfficeofSafety/Public...
PA RW: Yes-there WAS a study that was compiled for Conrail in the late 1970s to electrify the Middle Division to Pittsburgh and Conway... The NRHS had a copy of this Study in their Library in Philadelphia - and has been stored since its closure at the end of February 2008... As we know today Conrai...
Somewhere out there, a feasibility study for electrifying the Middle Division exists - I've had a brief glance at it from a friend's collection. The thing that struck me about it is that fuel cost for electricity compared to coal (for steam engines) was actually slightly higher around the time of th...
