Re: Amtrak Empire Service (New York State)

I'm not advocating to use the old track 4 row for Amtrak. What I'm saying is to give Amtrak present day track 2 and rebuild the freight mains to the old 3&4 row. You would end up with CSX tracks 4 and 3 an empty space where track 1 was and Amtrak track 2. No need for flyovers or moving stations...

I think a simpler option would be to just give Amtrak track two and rebuild the freight mains where 3 and 4 used to be. This still probably wouldn't meet the CSX distance rule but would give Amtrak their own dedicated track good for maybe 100-110 mph without moving stations and yards across the state.

Bergen Hill was the steepest grade on the NYCRR mainline between Albany and Chicago. It was steeper than any grades on the Erie or DL&W mainlines. I used to hear this from time to time from NYC guys, and it is total BS. We used to call them spoiled flatlanders. Sorry to disappoint, but Bergen h...

It looks to me that there was 10 RS3's with a build date of 7-51, NYC 8251-8280. Try looking for photos of these before September 1952.

As for NYC all the PA1 and 2s came with 100mph gearing , EMD E8s 98 mph, even a group of FM Erie Built 103 mph later reduced to 97. Apparently NYC felt the need for speed as their last freight units came with high speed gearing . Alco C430 and GE U30b both came geared for 75 mph and GP 40s for 77. T...

The only thing I can think of is CSX losing unit grain trains to Fulton and Military trains to Drum to a FGLK/NS routing.
Then they might lose NY/NJ traffic to NYSW.

I'm not sure New York Central had a preference for feed water heaters. At the end yes they used Worthington on all Niagaras and the last Mohawks L-4. Before that they were all over the place with Mohawks using three types, Worthington,Elesco, and Coffin. One sub-group L-2a used both Elesco and Worthi...
