Re: Feasibility of an LA to Bay Area night train?

As someone who lives in the East Bay, I wouldn't mind having an overnight train to LA. I live on the wrong side of SFO and taking a train from my suburban town overnight to SoCal would be nice. My gripe here is that the train, like most "proposals" is that the one proposal is treated like ...

A more efficient solution would be to lock one of the discussions near the top of the Amtrak sections so people can just add onto one long one.

I like the idea, but do we even have enough Viewliners or sidelined Superliners to try that? Part of the reason why I am suggesting this for the Amfleets is they are going to get replaced in the not so distant future and Amtrak should take advantage of that rather than scrapping them like they norma...

Take a look for yourself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voGVjSUeIAo" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I have seen that We'd have to punch a new window in the Amfleet or Horizon cars and that may not be structurally possible to do. I am not saying that a new version of a slu...

I don't see how the turning Amfleets or Superliners into Slumber Coaches to milk 10 years out of them would be worth while given their internal design. Not to mention everyone thinks it will empty out the roomettes if a budget option was added to Amtrak. Assuming there are 36 roomettes on a Superlin...

It seems every 6 months or so somebody introduces an entirely new thread over this issue which we have debated over and over again, and yet no one to date has been able to find a way to balance the books. My thought behind "balancing the books" would be to appeal to people in coach rather...

This is what BART and CAHSRA originally planned for.

I figure adapting something used by airlines would be more likely (especially if converting an existing car like a Horizon or Amfleet). Not to mention doing that took me about 20 minutes.

Even junking the Amfleets doesn't make complete sense. It must be done. The windows on those cars are too small and they have reached the end of their service life. Amtrak pays dearly to operate this fleet using custom made parts and refurbished shells. Siemens has a global presence and will likely...

Yes, the Comets won't be around forever. The Comet IIs are the oldest comets operating on NJT. The Horizon cars were based off of the design of the original NJT Comet IIs. If the Comet IIs are going to be retired soon, then I'm sure that the Horizons will as well. It will be a welcoming sight to se...

If the designs for the California Cars weren't available to adapt, why would Siemens make their designs available to be adapted?

The current airline model isn’t much more than the Duplex roomette patented by Pullmanin 1942. In fact, it’s a bit less, no sink and toilet. Imhope you meant 36 berths, not 36 sections in the open section format. At 6’6” per section, including partition, 18 sections is 117 feet long, a smidge longe...

I would still think pushing the Horizon cars farther south or converting some of them into an experimental budget sleeper would be better options. Anything in the Northeast is likely going to get whatever replaces the Amfleet cars. As for being capable for push-pull service, the dining cars on the c...

This is a topic that came up in the Amfleet replacement tab, but I think it is something that should get talked about on its own. One idea that I brought up is that some the existing Amfleets should be refurbished into a mix of open sections and an adapted version of intercontinental business class ...
