Here's a story from last year as well (below). Unfortunately I have seen stories of incidents all over the system, with some attacks taking place not just during the late hours but also during the middle of the day and during rush hour, and at locations one might ordinarily assume to be safe. A recent visit to Letterkenny Army Depot found the two Army GE 80-tons (USA 1674 and 1685), supposedly sold last year, are still there. They're stored outside and a Pennsylvania & Southern shop employee said they're fired up a few times a year but they don't go anywhere. He thinks the P&S ma...

Perfbill: I suspect the museum itself would not be in favor of a bus shuttle. If I recall correctly, the museum doesn't charge admission but it does charge for parking, and those arriving by bus wouldn't generate revenue for the museum.

I'm sure the new concrete company owners were well aware of the railway situation when they purchased the property for $11 million and planned to spend more to replace older equipment that had been auctioned off. One doesn't commit that kind of money and then decide rail service would be desirable. ...

Here's an interesting news item. A new company has taken over the old Bayshore Concrete plant in Cape Charles. It was the closure of the old plant that pushed the BCR over the edge, leading to the end of rail operations within a few months last year. Unfortunately there's no mention of using the now...

I've never been to NSB Kings Bay but I recall hearing somewhere that most of its rail movements were on-base only and not so much to the interchange. That might explain the rusty rail. The same was true at NB Kitsap (formerly NSB Bangor). Five years ago I visited the base and the head of rail ops to...

At one time Charleston AFB (now part of Joint Base Charleston) had a GE 80-ton centercab locomotive on its short branch leading into the base. I've never been able to determine when it left but I believe it departed in the early 1980s for Barksdale AFB, LA, which also abandoned its base railway deca...

Yep, Naval Weapons Station Charleston handles ordnance (munitions), which makes it extraordinarily difficult to enter. A military ID can get you into the main base area but you need to have special access to enter the restricted area. This is true of any DOD base handling munitions. I think you're r...

True, the military rail operation at Naval Shipyard Charleston ended along time ago. I believe it was in March 1993 that its closure was announced and the end came in March 1995. It had USN 65 00528, a GE 45-ton centercab built in 1944 and USN 65 00607, a GE 65-ton built in 1941. Around 1990 I visit...

Here is my list of the remaining USN bases with their own rail operations: NWS Charleston, SC NWS Earle, NJ NCBC Gulfport, MS NSB Kings Bay, GA NB Kitsap (Formerly Naval Submarine Base Bangor. Naval Base Kitsap was created in 2004 by merging the former Naval Station Bremerton with Naval Submarine Ba...

I believe fellow you are referring to is the same person that was trying start up tourist train between Hurlock and Vienna just after the turn of the century. I see you know him (or know of him) too. The Delmarva Central Railroad took over the western portion from the Delaware Coast Line Railroad as well as the short piece ...
