Much of the former SAL main through NC, SC, GA, and even FL was abandoned. Why did CSX wait to 1985-86? Did SCL abandon anything after their merger in 1967? I can see why much of the SAL was abandoned near the east coast as it was single track and cut across mostly marshland with bridges and narrow fills. However, why was so much SAL abandoned in Central FL?

The SAL main from Centralia to Petersburg in VA was abandoned very shortly after the merger. From Petersburg it picked up until the Norlina -> Petersburg bit was abandoned in the mid 80s.
