I thought that both the 401 and RSC-2 were in Museums?

The 321 was a former KB&S unit..Correct?

More bad news from Trainorders and the Alco Yahoo email group:

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/ALCO ... sage/11264

A post on Trainorders today indicates Michigan Southern's Alcos are going to
scrap. I can't verify but sad if they are.

Currently list of locomotives affected:

#66 S1
#466 RS2
#977 RS3m
#7804 RS3

All are evidently assembled at White Pigeon, MI.

I believe 466 is the first 1500 HP Alco, and was beat to the 1500 HP threshold by mere weeks by C&G Baldwin 601. 1500 HP was way off for EMD. 466 is a piece of mechanical engineering history, and probably belongs in the Smithsonian as a tribute to diesel engine development-no kidding. I simply cannot believe that the preservation community would overlook this. Has anyone tried to get this engine for a museum????

Just for the record, #66 was an Alco S4.
Lehigh Valley Alco S4 #166 - built new for the LV May 1951
b/n 78725
To Precision Engineering (Dealer) ??/1969.
To Steelton & Highspire #66.
Refitted with Blunt style trucks by S&H (making it appear to be an S-2, but it is not).
To South Buffalo #66.
To Michigan Southern #66.
scrapped December 2011, White Pigeon, MI.

From Joe Ferguson:

The following locos are being cut up this week in La Harpe, IL:

PREX RS3m 203

All had been cannibalized so heavily as to make it uneconomical to move them off
the property, let alone save anything.

with scrap prices as high as they've been lately, preserving much of anything has gotten 100x more challenging than it was just a few years ago. This goes for just about anything- if it's made of steel, the chinese want to make widgets out of it. It's incredible when you drive around and look at how much junk that's been forgotten about and left to sit for the last 3 decades has just disappeared in the last 3 years.

Still, incredible that the rebuilt C425s and M420s would be headed to scrap! I guess with the economy nobody is looking for more power, and with the price of scrap so high units getting scrapped now are realizing prices not far short of what a serviceable locomotive might have gone for just a few years ago (and may still go for, since I think the used loco market remains a substantial oversupply/under-demand situation).

Sad.
