What's happening with the tracks or lack thereof on the Rahway river bridge in Carteret, 3 tracks bottleneck down to one over the bridge as you can see here:

Used to be 2 tracks for many years, so why just 1 now?
Maybe because the bridge is so old, rusty and rickety it could only handle 1 track of train weight?
Better get out the paint brush before it rusts away!!

Try WHAT HAPPENED DECADES AGO!
Track 1 has been gone for decades over the bridge, see the rusty comms tower, rusty fencing and other structures built where the track was on the west side of the bridge. Believe that was done around 1970 likely as a result of the Closure of the Jersey City terminal and shifting of the CNJ Seashore trains onto the PRR line at WOOD.

A maintenance guy I knew explained that painting hides cracks and other imperfections in steel structures, rails, couplers, wheels, etc. The charm of the brown patina of rusty steel structures.
