Did the CGW route to KC get abandoned with the rest of the CGW? I wonder if this line was kept until the Spine Line was aquired from RI?

The line to KC was torn up in 1982, when the CNW got trackage rights over the Rock before buying the Spine Line. Other parts of the CGW were already gone or would soon be. North of Oelwein to the Twin Cities saw its last train in late 1981. Most of the track east of Oelwein was also abandoned in 1981. By 1984 the only significant parts in Iowa still open was from Oelwein to Marshalltown, Oelwein to west of Hampton, and Manly to Somers.

My recollection was that the only parts of the Great Western that the North Western wanted were the line to KC and some of the terminal traffic in Minneapolis (Roseport Industrial Sub). And yes, traffic tapered off mightily once the Spine Line was available.
