Little-known fact - the original plans for the 01400 rebuild program in the 1970’s proposed upgrading the cars with greater soundproofing (which was ordered removed from the specs by cheapo MTA general manager McLernon when they were built), air-conditioning, fluorescent lights and new seating. These features were dropped due to funding reasons and the cars were instead reconditioned as is with only new headlights, a public address system and a modified heating and cooling fans control system added (the ATO retrofit was a completely separate project). I read the project document for this back in 1980 – not sure if it’s in the Transportation Library now.

I heard from a Red Line motorperson after I asked how're the 01400s doing, they said that they couldnt run under their own power anymore, and I was like, oh no. I wonder if this is indeed true, that the 01400 train is now demotored. I hope not.... I hope that they can still move on their own like all newer trains

If that's true, they could run (in theory) in "push-pull" mode being push or pulled by 01500s/01600s/01700s.

Does that mean each pair as its own unit pulling a trailer, or they could only run if all 4 of them were trainlining together? If it's the former, I don't see the point in keeping them any longer...they're useless. You've got to burn a 15 or 16 to run the work consist at all. If it's the latter, I guess they can wheeze along just a little bit longer as whole consist.

Obvious question here...if they're in that bad a shape, why are they not bringing over some 0600's from Blue for work duty??? They did this with a whole bunch of OL 01100's in the 80's reassigned to Cabot after they were retired from Wellington. Who cares if there's no cab signals on Red and they have to crawl to do their thing. It's shutdown hours and they can't afford to be getting revenue cars needed for the next morning bogged down with work duty.

This is getting sad. Are they going to wait until there's a whole slew of 15/16's that can't run on their own power before getting on with it on this replacement order?

Thats true, they could do that also.

As for Blue line 0600s replacing the 01400s as work trains, that might not happen, even though it did with the Orange 01100s a quarter century back, different things have gone on

There are only 4 0600's left on the property, and they are used for the blue line work train. All others are striped and scraped.

Stevie, unless there's been a very recent development, I'm fairly certain that's not true.

Perhaps they haven't actually been stripped of parts yet, but apparently Stevie has some knowledge that only 4 are being kept for any work service.

That much is true. None of the remaining cars are operable except for the work train, but there are still a few in dead storage at Orient Heights.

As for the 01400s, I'd heard that they weren't used anymore and that there were problems with them that were likely not to be repaired. I'm currently seeking further details, and will report back if/when I'm successful.

OK, thanks for doing so, Corey. Let us know what happens!

Ok so scraped striped they can't not run anymore.

A car that is stripped cannot be operated, a car that is scrapped does not exist. Those are two very different things!

I've gotten report from someone within operations that the 01400s are OOS because of deferred maintenance. Nothing has been removed from them nor were there any notable major failures to their knowledge but they aren't in working order. It seems probable that they will not return to work service.

Oh I see, thanks for the latest update at least they are fully intact......

The Penn Central told me to tell you that they disagree with you, Corey.
