Take a look at these photos of A&M C420's number 56 and 57:

http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... ?id=402961

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.p ... 20&nseq=13

notice the "flared radiator" section at the rear of the longhood!
they look like C424 or C425 radiators..

All C420's, as built, have smooth sides back there, like this:

so anyone know the story of A&M 56 and 57?
they have clearly been rebuilt..
what was done to them? where and when?

These two started out as Lehigh & Hudson River 25 and 26, then went to BC Rail in Canada,
(BC 630 and 631), before coming to the A&M..
perhaps they went through some kind of MLW rebuild program?
M420's were built new with that flare, but not Schenectady-built C420's, (as far as I know.)
and these two are definatly not MLW-built.

I found photos of them on the L&HR without the flare, (as built)
then photos on BCrail *with* the flare:

thanks,

I noticed the same thing on 2 ex-LIRR C420s that went to NdeM in Mexico. (204, 220)
Naturally, I can't find a photo right now, but have photos saved from defunct websites!

Just speculation, but I agree it appears that C424/425 radiators have been applied to them, I assume from some of the parts units they had. This technically makes the radiator section much like a C424 - the C425 had a stepped area underneath the radiator of intermediate width (to accommodate a larger radiator fan, as I remember). I guess it gets hot in Arkansas, and perhaps the extra cooling power comes in handy. :)

Yes, I believe it was the BCR that added these on up in Canada.
