Does anyone know what's being done along the old Raritan River RR ROW at Bergen Hill? The overgrown ROW that runs from under Main Street all the way to the RRRR's Bergen Hill trestle (which runs over the Amboy Secondary) has been clear cut. This was a sizeable effort because they removed some rather large trees 20 to 30 feet up the embankment on each side of the old ROW. It looks like they also cleared out parts (if not all) of the concrete platform that was once part of the RRRR's Bergen Hill Station.

I did a Google search and found no news except for some guy who jumped off the bridge for a swim.

I did find some interesting background on the RR< though.

There's an email on the last link; maybe the historical society knows something?

In this link from the one of the sites in the previous post, there are 2 pictures of the scrapping of this branch (which went to South Amboy and the NY&LB connection) in 1985.
About in the middle of this web page: http://raritanriver-rr.com/ForgottenHistory14.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Aerial photos seem to show the ROW in question kept fairly clear (by the dirtbikes and quads, no doubt). No obvious power lines, but could be some buried cables (or plans to run some). I estimate the section in question (from the main to the bridge over PRR/Conrail) to be very close to a mile.

Well, I may have finally determined why the RRRR ROW in the Bergen Hill area was cleared...the RRRR bridge that crossed over the Pennsy tracks at Bergen Hill has been demolished! I think the Middlesex County Utilities Authority now has rights on the old RRRR ROW, so it appears they have something planned for this piece of real estate. It's so sad to see another of the very few remaining vestiges of the RRRR eliminated.

To see the RRRR Bergen Hill bridge before its demise, see Figures 22 through 27 at http://www.raritanriver-rr.com/RRRRFieldTrip4.htm.
