In German, Fahren means "to go". In Norwegian, fart means "motion". Along the Norwegian coast are a multitude of signs here and there saying "Sakte Fart",meaning "slow motion" or "go slow" - the nautical equivalent of a "slow board".
In this case the name is not derived from a Germanic root but is an acronym for Ferrovie Autolinee Regionali Ticinesi (Regional Railways and Bus Routes in the Ticino). Someone, I believe George Drury, in his Railfan's Guide to Switzerland, commented that for all we know, ATSF may mean something funny in Italian.
