Jay Winn became a railfan in the late 1940s when his grandfather began taking him to Utica NY's Union Station to watch the NY Central.

In this recent video beginning at the 32:25 mark, he discusses some of his remembrances of the NYC including a coal train derailment in Oriskany NY which nearly had disastrous consequences for the westbound New England States:
