Gotta love Mr Sabine! I am loving this day and age what with the pics you posted along with the IAIS doing the old RI hearald on the noses of its power and the A-OK doing the red and yellow with old hearald as well. This is a nice nod to history, Am just glad the UP doesnt own the rights to its image.

Union Pacific doesn't own rights to the Rock Island name or herald.

If I recall correctly, it was in the domain of the Maytag Company (!) for a while and was transferred to a preservation group, perhaps the Rock Island Technical Society.

I do believe Heartland LLC owns the rights to it. I am not too sure but I know IAIS uses it now in its logos and the A-OK as well.

Mr. Crown, the owner of all/part of maytag, I believe bought some interest in RI for scrap value, believing it was going to sink. I think he was one of the people pushing hardest for bankruptcy. I might be way off though.

Update - there's a line in OK using the red/yellow scheme for their GE's, complete with the beaver pelt herald. This may be public domain, if that many railroads are using the beaver pelt and variations of the paint schemes.

Now if only those bi-levels were red with yellow stripes!

This F40 now sports a Rock Island herald on the nose of the cab.

The cars now sport a yellow stripe, but instead of red, they've gone with black. The aptly named "Hawkeye Express," is used by the Iowa Northern to haul apporximately 6,000 fans to and from Iowa Hawkeye games.

Actually, Maytag got the RI's logos and trademarks because their parent company, Chicago Pacific Corporation, owned Hoover Vacuums(!), and Maytag wanted it
