The ferries used to run right from the dock adjacent to Greenport Station, and could do so with minimum fuss (dredge, etc.) They stopped when the RR throttled back on pax operation, and also due to village pressure to divert all of that vehicle traffic to Orient Point. Resumption of ferry service with a connection to the rail was recently brought up in the press, notably with this notion of an 'east end authority' to take over from the LIRR.

Montauk also had the dock adjacent to the station, and is where the condos are now. The station given to the old fart paint-by-number skells is the third Montauk Station, the second is the office for the condo complex and follows the old alignment of the row. The hurricane of '35 and the Navy's activities during WW II pushed ferry service to where it is today. Restoring service here would be more difficult with the condo communities, but offering to buy up them up shouldn't be a problem when the residents are told they have to listen to the DE/DM's for the next 50 years...
