Apparently, NS was the holdout on this agreement. Should be interesting to see what detours take place as the construction begins. As most of you know, this is the first CREATE project that primarily benefits passenger trains. NS will benefit indirectly from not having to stop at the Englewood diamond every time a METRA goes by and may experience less incidents of trailer breakins (if the Chicago Line is still an intermodal corridor west of Englewood, the area has been notorious for resident thieves breaking into trailers to rob contents while a train is stopped. In PC and CR days, a TV train generally did not leave the 47th St or 59th St. terminal until the Englewood op advised he had them lined up so they could make a clean break out of town).

Politicians break ground for Englewood Flyover project
Yesterday, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.), and other federal, state and local dignitaries broke ground on the Englewood Flyover, the Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency (CREATE) program’s second-largest project.

The $133 million project calls for building a triple-track bridge in Englewood, Ill., to carry three of Metra’s Rock Island District Line tracks over four Norfolk Southern Railway tracks. To be completed in spring 2014, the project also will accommodate additional tracks for proposed 110-mph Amtrak service from Chicago to Detroit, Cleveland and other eastern points.

Information received from METRA indicates that a contractor still needs to be selected before any meaningful work can commence on this project.
