ANSAmed) The centre-right government of the new Portuguese Prime Minister, Pedro Passos Coelho, has decided to suspend the construction of the Portuguese part of the high-speed rail link between Lisbon and Madrid, which was due to be concluded in 2013, the Portuguese press has reported.
Passos Coelho's government, which was formed last week, took the decision as part of plans to cut public spending, a measure needed to reduce state deficit and to respect the austerity directives imposed by the EU and IMF in exchange for the 78 billion euro bailout that has staved off the threat of bankruptcy for the country.
