Does any body know anything about the covered bridge that used to stand between Greenfield and Montague city over the CT river?

It was constructed in 1870 and designed to have a road deck below and train tracks on the roof. The plans refer to Boston and Maine tracks on the roof

The abutments are located just north of the general pierce bridge, it was washed out in the flood on 1936 and it was responsible for destroying part of the rail road trestle from east Deerfield yard to Montague (now a rail trail) just south of the road bridge. If you look at the 3 section trestle you will notice not all the sections match.

Was the covered bridge ever used with trains on its roof? are there any signs or maps of the old road bed that would have put the trains on this bridge ?

Some pictures of the road only and plans for the bridge can be seen here

Image 4 refers to the tracks of the Boston & Maine.

yes, the top of that6 bridge was used, first by the Fitchburg RR and later, the B&M.
The enclosed 1880 map shows all the bridges in the immediate vicinity (it is the one from
Cheapside to Montague City. Called the Turners Falls Bridge as, the Turners Falls Branch of the
RR went across it
The photo is about 25 years later. the RR is still up on top of the bridge.
The picture shows how the road entered the bridge. The bridge in the foreground
is the Connecticut Valley St.Ry. trolley bridge.
