Took photos of the pier work from the waterside on the last Working Harbor boat tour.
Of interest was the guide on that tour was from the NYC EDC (they are the ones funding the new pier and track work off First Avenue) She spoke of the Mayors new initiative to revitalize the Bush Terminal area (and the City Pier work as a first step in this) Also spoke how EDC is moving the NYPD impound yards along the waterfront to try and get more commercial developement. (however this is the same group that has not granted an opertion lease to the newest float yard and float bridges in the old Bayridge Yard) There are other forces in City Hall working to get Industry City rezoned for luxury Condos, So time will tell.
EDC is getting new customers to move in, but they are focusing on waterborne freight movements, Aggregates, cement, import beverages (most of your imported beer comes in by container ship and then distributed by trucks throughout the tri-state area) and the scrap dealer along Newtown Creek will be opening another transfer yard near Industry City soon. Not much mentioned about rail, (just that it would be nice)
Whatever happens, there will be more public access to the area, so we can witness what happens a bit closer.
Recently, I've moved to Brooklyn, and the interchange tracks between Fourth and Fifth Avenues have had cuts of cars on it, and they do vary in type day to most days (mostly covered hoppers and gondolas). So something railroady is going on down there.
