Ground Breaking Reform Achieved

A Common Set of Rules for Rail

The Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board today released the second and final tranche of the Australian National Rules and Procedures (ANRP) which is associated with Train
Operations.

The first tranche, which focussed on people working on the railways, was released in March 2009. Combined they form a suite of safe working Rules and Procedures to cover
all rail operations in Australia.

“This is a ground breaking reform” said Bryan Nye, CEO of the Australasian Railway
Association (ARA).

“I cannot emphasise enough the importance of this release. Since railway operations began in Australia 150 years ago we have been plagued by different rules and procedures
depending on where you were located.” Mr Nye continued.

“The working group from railway operators across Australia are to be congratulated on the effort they put into this important project.” concluded Mr Nye.

There have been many attempts to achieve this milestone over the last 100 years, but all have failed.

It is a true reflection of the determination of the Rail Industry to be part of the solution to improve public transport and taking more freight off our roads.
