I have been wondering for years whether there was a particular reason the LS&MS ran left-handed. Does anybody know, or when they changed to right-handed?

I can't answer the first part. However, according to the book The Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway by McLellan & Warrick, the changeover occurred on July 25, 1909.
