R160's

When the next R160's go into service, does anyone know what lines will they be on?

Subway cars are assinged to yards. all incoming A2s and Bs are going to Jamaica.

Does anyone know the following:

1- How many R-160's is the city buying?

2- Roughly how many are in-service so far?

3- How they are numbered?

actually, now 9943-9974 will be regular cars, as the first 64 A-1cars (8313-8378) have been outfitted with CBTC.

FYI Not sure if this applies here but, this week I saw at a truck stop what appears to be a subway car(wrapped & tarped) that looked like it would fit IRT lines. 3 doors roughly 40ft long 8' 6" wide.
At the Travel Center of America(T/A) in Youngstown, Oh. Should have grabbed a pic.

hmmm, interesting, i believe those would be the PA-5's for PATH, theyre 51 ft.. all car bodies come from lincoln nebraska.

yep, i probably should have been clearer, since that's what i meant

all trucks and running gear is installed at Yonkers.

KR: To be exact NYCT assigns cars to specific Maintenance Shops so shop crews can become familiar with them.
It is more then just the yards that they assign a car fleet to. MACTRAXX

The CBTC equipped cars, are they for the L, or are they planning to convert other lines?

for now, only the L is CBTC.
the 7 is next and then the Queens Boulevard Line (E, F), but these two preliminary projects wont be complete till the second avenue line is scheduled to be finished in 2020 ish (add 5-10 years), it will have CBTC also.

the entire system is supposed to be CBTC compatible by 2065 ish...

Please forgive my ignorance but what does CBTC stand for? The last two letters are probably for "Train Control." Is it "Computer Based Train Control"? And what's wrong with real, live human train crews?

By the way, I like the Siemens cars better than the Alstoms. They sound better. The Alstom cars have this weird "piccolo music" carrier wave sound that seems to play a tune, but doesn't seem to have relationship to motor speed or braking.

I actually like the R-160 despite the full-width cab. Now that they're running extensively on the F line, I rode them the other day over the Smith-9th St. viaduct. What's interesting is even though the cab door window is dark/blurry glass, you can reasonably see thru it outside the tunnels in daylight. (The glass is half full for now at least, unlike PATH's new cars) And it's a nice car in general. Good interior colors somewhat reminiscent of the R-40/42's when they were new 40 years ago. I wish they would have gone with transverse seating like the R-44/46's. And the electronic route/progress maps are a great feature, but I wonder if they will be kept in-service for the life of the cars. I can easily see them breaking down in a few years and not getting fixed and eventually getting covered over with cenventional paper strip maps.
