IRT Woodlawn Line Abandoned Trackways Near 161st Street

While looking at this photo http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?100342 of the IRT Woodlwan line (# 4 train) a bit north of the 161st Street station, I see there are two abandoned trackways that descend and turnout to the west in the vicinity of the new Yankee Stadium.

Is that the remnant of the connection to the IRT Ninth Avenue Elevated Line?

Yes.

A bit to the west of there on Jerome, there is a tunnel in the side of a hill with the remnants of an el station.

That is the remnant of the Anderson-Jerome station. On the other side of the tunnel, under the Major Deegan Expressway, is the remnant of the Sedgwick Avenue station.

Note - I would not recommend anyone trying to visit these old stations unless you went with a large group of people. They are not easy to get to (and they are known drug use areas).

This was also the last section of the Mahattan el system in use-the Polo Grounds shuttle between 155 Street (Polo Grounds) and Jerome which lasted until 1958 when the New York Giants (Baseball) moved to San Francisco.

The section between River Avenue and Jerome Avenue, including the Jerome-Anderson station, wasn't torn down until 1962 or '63. I remember going with my family to Yankee Stadium, and the structure was still intact.

The new Yankee Stadium now covers the space used by the old route.
