Today, A Coney Island Bound D train derailed just north of 81st street. Derailment was said to be caused by a four foot piece of jagged broken rail.
As of now there are no c trains and a,b,d trains are running local between 125 street and 59 street. The train is still in sight from the southbound platform looking northbound.

The news said that the 3 line would see delays as a result of this accident, how could that be? Because of displaced passengers?

most likely because the subways would be packed.

Here's something you don't see everyday...an (A) train derailed earlier near 81st Street and struck a wall. That whole area is still a mess at this point Saturday night (I think (A)(D) are running local and (C) is not running at all).

Here are some photos from earlier today:

Did the rails corrode due to salt/brackist water exposure?

From NBC New York:
Associated Press/NBC New York wrote:Normal A Train Service Resumes After Train Derails

The MTA said Sunday that service was back to normal on the A, C and D lines.

Service is back on track on the A train after a derailment spurred the evacuation of dozens of passengers.

The MTA said Sunday that service was back to normal on the A, C and D lines.

A train on the southbound A line lost a wheel and derailed on Manhattan's Upper West Side just after 9 a.m. Saturday.

The passengers had to board another train that backed up to the stranded one. They were brought to the Columbus Circle station.

No one was injured.

NBCNewYork.com: Subway Derails on Elevated Tracks in the Bronx: MTA

A bit dated. You don't hear too much about derailments anymore, not like in the bad old days. Brief, fair-use quote per forum policy:
Subway service was delayed Friday afternoon when a 6 train experienced a "minor derailment" at the Parkchester Station in the Bronx.
...
The MTA rerouted southbound 6 trains to the express track from Pelham Bay Park to Hunts Point Avenue.

The cause of the derailment was under investigation, but the agency said "one axle/two wheels had left the track."

"At approximately 3:04 p.m. the emergency brakes were automatically activated on a southbound 6 train north of the Parkchester station in the Bronx. The train operator and a supervisor inspected the outside of the train and discovered one axle/two wheels had left the track," NYC Transit Senior VP Sally Librera said in a statement.
