Is Riverhead now the end of the line for NYA operations on the Main Line, or did the customers east of there get a reprieve and still receive NYA service. What are the customers in the area and how often are they served? Thanks.

That is correct, Riverhead is as far east of the NYAR will go. Southold was ceased a few years ago due to the lack of frequent cars. Marjam bought out Penny lumber and there was a time where plans for the NYAR to go as far east as Greenport but fell thru once Marjam started trucking out east. Plus they already have a big site in Farmingdale. There was also talks about something going in in Mattituck but never materialized.

Who gets service in/near Riverhead, and how often? Thanks.

What were they going to ship out to Greenport? Were they going to build a new spur, or were they just going to spot the cars on the runaround and off load them there?

They do Paraco Gas in Riverhead, which is west of the station and near a grade crossing. They will also deliver lumber a few times a week.

Not sure where in Greenport, RPM but talks got serious about Marjam getting rail service out there.

Marjam is one costumer that has actually increased it's business over recent years. I guess with Penny taking their cars at Farmingdale it would be even more. For awhile they were taking cars for their location on the River line upstate in Rockland Co. at Farmingdale. The NYA started to service them like every 1to 2 days vs. once a week. Crews used to have get a train order to spot the 75' lumber flatcars in that siding. There was a special instructuion prohibiting train cars over 70' in that siding due to a tight curve. The train order would relieve the crew from complying with that speical instruction. The LIRR lifted the restriction a few years back.

Thurber lumber of Rocky Point also took cars at Penny lumber in Southold. Years back the Penny boxcars went to their Mattituck location. Getting back to Riverhead, Riverhead Building Supply also took cars. The siding is right at a crossing, Mill Road I believe. I don't know if NYA still bring cars out to that location. Once in a blue moon a flat would come in for them.

Riverhead Building Supply only takes the minimum amount of cars necessary to keep the railroad from yanking the switch. They have an interest in a trucking company, and transport many of the materials they receive via truck.

That's too bad. They could be a good corporate citizen by taking the majority of their incoming via rail from the NYA. I'm sure the NYA would switch them as often as necessary to make it all work out.......Too bad 84 Lumber is cock-blocked by the Town of Riverhead as a result of Riverhead Building Supply obviously corrupting Town officials with regard to 84 Lumber's spur and NYA servicing it. Maybe the N.Y.S. Attorney General (I want to be governor!!!!) should look into the obvious malfeasance that is occurring there.

Right next to Paraco, is an old siding with several cabooses on it. Can anyone shed some light on them? Heritage? Current ownership?

Not sure of their heritage (I've heard they are ex-IC, but not sure), but they are privately owned by the property owner. The switch was yanked about 10 years ago after the owner failed to pay his freight bill, landlocking the hacks.

At one time, the Village of Greenport wanted to purchase one for a display, but the owner wanted too much for them.

What a great guy, stiffing the railroad on it's bills, and then asking a lot of money for something he's trying to sell. Yay!

What customer was served by that spur before it was snipped from the Main Line because the caboose guy welched? What kind of cars did they take? Thanks.

The hacks are MP. Actually, one is MP one is T&P. The siding served Riverhead Redi Mix and an A&P. Theres also a 40' boxcar back there..

Might be some news on one of them hacks soon..
