Gentlemen: Two Question - I walk along the Schuykill River Trail that parallels the CSX
tracks. There is a milepost that has ""BBF"" on top and ""0"" on the bottom - I believe
this is the start of the Trenton branch - What does ""BBF"" stand for ?? - Second question - a little farther North of this mile post is a Cylinder adjacent to the tracks
that is approximately 18 inch diameter and 30 inchs high - In the vacinity of this cylinder the tracks are full of grease. Is this an automatic ""greaser""

Thank youmb38

The BBF prefix for mile post is a CSX milepost designation for a former B&O line. BBF 0 is at the B&O ownership point at Park Jct with the mile number increasing in the Westward timetable direction. Milepost on the Philadelphia Sub from RG Tower to Baltimore are of the BAK prefix with the mile number increasing in the Westward timetable direction.

Former ConRail territories have an initial letter designator of Q. QA, QB etc.
Former C&O territories have an inital letter designator of C.
Former ACL territories have an initial letter designator of A.
Former Seabord territories have an initial letter designator of S.
Former L&N territories have an initial numerical designator of 0 (zero).
Former Clinchfield territories have an initial letter designator of Z.
Former Georgia Railroad territories have an initial letter designator of Y.
Former P&LE territories retain their P&LE designators of PLE, PLY & PLM
Former RF&P territories are designated CFP on the main line, and CFQ on the Dahlgren Branch.

Sample locations and their milepost designaor in the CSX System
Philadelphia - BBF 8
Baltimore (Bayview) - BAK 88
Richmond - A 0
Richmond (C&O Fulton Yard) - CA 83
Richmond (RF&P Acca Yard) - AACA (which is not part of any system ????)
Jacksonville - A 640
Miami - SX1033
New Orleans - 000801
Atlanta - ANB865
New Castle, PA - BG 58
Bening Yard - QL 134

CSX computer system has a milepost field of 6 characters where one is required. Depending upon original owner mile designating conventions, the numbering of the milepost can be increasing in any timetable direction....East, West, North or South. Example the former P&LE station at Pittsburgh (now know as Station Square) has a dual milepost designation PLE 0 & PLY 0. The PLE numbers increase Westward. The PLY numbers increase Eastward.
