Reduced number of trains was due to 2 instances of substituted bus
service on the Boston section of the Lake Shore Limited, and annulments
on the Syracuse Corridor due to the washout in the Highlands and the CSX freight derailment in the Mohawk Valley.
Services which showed improvement during this period included the
westbound Lake Shore Limited, southbound City of New Orleans, and eastbound Detroit Corridor.
Of the late trains, at least 65 (about 1/3 less than the prior period departed their initial terminal so late that an on-time arrival was not possible. 11 of these delayed departures occurred at Pontiac on the
Detroit Corridor service.
On the eastbound St. Louis Corridor, #22 (Texas Eagle) and #304
departed St. Louis on time on 16 and 8 dates respectively, with 0
on-time arrivals at Chicago on those dates.
On the eastbound Syracuse Corridor, #64 (Maple Leaf) had 0% OTP and accounted for 37% of the delay time on this route.
There were several instances of extreme differences in the performance of opposite directions on the same route. These included the City of New Orleans and the Crescent. The Boston section of the Lake Shore Limited saw #449 make the running time 21% of the trips compared to 62% for #448.
Of the trains more than 2' late:
the Lake Shore Limited accounted for 39;
the Capitol Limited for 30;
the Three Rivers for 17; and
the St. Louis Corridor for 16.
The total amount of delay time at the measuring points would have been
considerably more if it were not for the extensive padding (aka: Amtrak
"recovery time") in the schedules. Among these allowances are:
1' 10" Fostoria to Chicago on #41;
40" Akron to PGH and 40" Altoona to HAR on #40;
55" CLE to CHI on #29;
30" CLE to PGHJ and 35" CUM to WAS on #30;
35" SYR to NYP on #64;
35" ALB to BOS on #448; and
35" CHI to STL on #303.
All for this time. We'll see what the next period brings.
