The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation applied for and received $3.8 million of funding for VRE to use to fully match the $15 million of state funding VRE had previously received.

With these funds we will be able to increase our initial purchase of locomotives from two to five. Furthermore, because of the larger initial purchase, we will save more than $1 million on the cost of the first two vehicles. These means that in about two years, we will have new locomotives for nearly half of our current train sets. (VRE has 11 trainsets)

We will continue to aggressively pursue additional funding for new locomotives. Our goal is to exercise all of the options available and order a total of 20 new locomotives. We are now a quarter of the way there!

Will VRE use an option on MARC's current order of 26 locomotives?
