York County rail plan advances
By David Dagan
7/11/2008

The effort to start a railroad along the York County Heritage Rail
Trail is chugging ahead.

Codorus Creek Railway plans to offer freight rail service to
businesses in the southern end of the county. The line would run
north to York, where it would connect with an existing rail hub.

Good news I hope. I certainly wish those guys the best, but wonder where their business is going to come from. In the later days of the York-New Freedom line, a car or two a week was big business, and there hadn't been any freight business on the Stewartstown RR since the early 1970s. The crew that's apparently "running" the Stewartstown now have a potentially promising tourist line, since it's a virtually untouched late 19th century railroad, but it will take a lot of money and some aggressive marketing to make it work. When George Hart was operating the line, I think he was doing it for his own fun and didn't really care if anyone showed up to ride.
