On the second order of C-40-8's with the wide cabs starting with 6100
which I think was in the early 1990's. I don't have the records handy as
to just what year those particular engines were delivered. After this took
place, earlier engines were done with "Conrail Quality" as they were
repainted in the shops.

And using Noel's info, I tracked it down further..
the Quality scheme first appeared in 1991.
Conrail 6100 was the first of the 1991 fifty-unit order. Beginning with 6100, all Conrail C40-8W's came painted in the Quality scheme.

Do not forget the Quality scheme tied in with the beginning of the Conrail charm school classes we all got paid to go to.

I have heard it said,"Any time a company puts 'New and Improved', or 'Quality', it is usually due to a perceived lack of such, in the past."
