In the 1980s, after most of the R9's were retired, they still had thousands of R9 lubricator pads around. What has become of those pads today?

I guess they were thrown away. And they save some pads for the museum fleet.

My guess would be wool waste pads for the journals and motor-axle bearings. They are used to wick oil from a reservoir to the bearing surface. They were made obsolete by roller bearings.
