Here is my view of the present situation railroad wise in Fort Lauderdale.
CSX - and with them Tri-Rail and Amtrak has made no visible move to
get things back in operation yet. Suspect it will be several days before
Amtrak makes it down here. Tri-Rail might do a little better as Florida
owns the section of the line that they run over and maybe they will prod
CSX to get their rear end in motion. Nothing is run in days, rails are
rusty.
FEC - I know this is off topic here but as a comparison, they removed the
gate arms at most of the crossings, seems smarter to me than having to
replace broken ones anyway. They had crews out Monday afternoon
restoring the crossings and might be running in another day or so. Rails
are also rusty.
Amtrak has an advisory on their web sight concerning Florida service.
There is likely much damage to both railroads from Palm Beach County
north for quite a way.
I will post again sometime Tuesday if I see or notice any change to the
above.

Passed through NY Penn Station this evening, Tuesday Sept 7, and noticed the Silver Meteor (southbound to Florida) was cancelled (and the arrival board had the northbound Palmetto cancelled I believe). Have not perused Amtrak's website for updates, but I thought I remember reading they were going to try and operate trains to at least Jacksonville. Oh well for that!

Starting today (Wednesday, 9-8) Amtrak will be operating some service
between New York and Jacksonville but nothing south of Jacksonville.
There are a number of problems in central Florida that will need to be
taken care of before they will be able to operate down my way.
Slightly off topic but Tri-Rail commuter service will resume Wednesday,
September 8th but will operate only between the Miami Airport Station and
Deerfield Beach Station. Trackage north of Deerfield Beach still has a
number of problems with downed wires, signals out, crossing protection
most likely out too.
No alternate transportation is being offered south of Jacksonville.

Starting Thursday, September 9th, Amtrak is operating the Palmetto and
the Silver Metour between New York and Jacksonville. The Silver Star is
not operating and this might be due to the freight derailment at
Aberdeen, North Carolina. Auto Train is also still down.
CSX did run something northbound through here around 2:00AM on
Thursday morning, it might have been just a traveling switcher as I did
not get a look at the head end.
Tri-Rail still only operating between Miami and Deerfield Beach.

Understand Amtrak is restoring full service to Florida in stages over this
weekend. Maybe just in time to be affected by another hurrican, Ivan
this time.
WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH.
