Wasn't the GP20 a result?

The GP20 was introduced in 1959.

I take it that we are talking about the EMD built GP20 and not the variant- The OMAHA GP20 that uprr had, just how many GP20's were actually built?

I was referring to the "original" EMD GP20, built from 1959 to 1962. 260 units were built. I was writing in response to what Engineer Spike wrote about the GP20 being the result of UP's work in the early '70s; my point was that the "original" GP20 could not have been a result of something UP was doing in the early '70s.

Don Strack wrote the definitive history on Union Pacific's early experimentation with turbocharging the GP9s. See his on line article here http://utahrails.net/articles/up-gp9-turbo.php The first turbocharged GP9 was completed in December 1955 in the East LA Shops. Union Pacific experimented with Air Research, Elliott and finally EMD turbochargers in their GP9s before any GP20s were built.

Another Don Strack article here about the Union Pacific SD24s. Three were modified in the late 60s and early 70s. See the on line article here http://utahrails.net/articles/up-sd24.php :-)
