Upon the renumbering of ex-conrail units, CSX painted numbers yellow. What did NS do?

Their patch is black on white or the reverse. One unit (at least) was renumbered without a patch, the 3016, a GP40-2. If you didn't know better it wouldn't even appear to be renumbered.

why was 3016 left out? Is it still in service?

It wasn't left out so much as done differently from the rest. The renumber was painted on rather than patched, so the number areais white on blue. Last saw the engine in Harrison NJ in the niddle of August.
