Hi all

Can anyone tell me what type engine B&M #1755 was? It looks different than the EMDs I am used to seeing. I have an HO Guilford engine #380 that looks similar.

HELP?

It's a Lo nose GP18. It was built for B&M by EMD in 1961.

Are these engines at all rare? Did this one ever make it onto Guilford's roster?

The B&M had six of these, originally delivered as #1770-1775 they were renumbered after delivery to #1750-1755. These six units would have initially carried the same numbers under Guilford. A total of 350 GP18s were sold by EMD in the US.

1751 became ST 40
1752 became ST 41
1753 became ST 42
1754 became ST 44
1755 became ST 43

So they DID end up with Guilford. Did they get the gray paint?

Here is a reply I got about the photo via NERail:

Jonelle,

The 1755 was one of the 6 GP-18's the B&M purchased new in May of 1961. The BL-2's were traded in at the time towards the purchase of the GP-18's. The shot is in the North Yard in West Cambridge by the looks of it. The train was likely BO-1 and the tank cars may have been destined for W.R. Grace in Acton. (Between S. Acton and W. Concord.) This link is to one of my shots on the siding at West Concord with BO-1 in the clear, taking lunch the with the 1752 GP18 leading thought you might like it since I have noticed you shoot a lot of the Fitchburg route

1755 was not the same as the other 5. the other units had pairs of smaller fans over each radiator, just like the 1700 series bluebirds and 1550 class GP7. I have been told that this is because of the BL2 trade in. Even so there were only 4 BL2s. Wasn't a wrecked F unit also traded?
The 1755 had 1 large fan over each radiator, just like a late GP9 or stock 18.
