Was heading back from the hudson river park in jersey this evening when i hopped onto 95 from fortlee. Just as i got onto the highway i look to my left and see 2 brand new mta subway cars sitting on 2 flatbed trailors. They were sitting in the high/wide lane waiting for clearence. I was shocked to see them like this, had trucks on them too.

Is this a normal move for delivery?

They trucked the first R143 (or was it the R160) through Jersey City for its delivery. They can't go by rail, how else are they supposed to get there?

well i've never seen this before. I know they can't be run down the rails like regular freight cars. But thought why not just put them on a flatbed car, carry multiple units in a long consist?

Shortest trip by rail is from port of New Jersey to Selkirk NY then down to Yonkers, trip time in exces of two days if cars don't get lost in the black hole called selkirk yard.

Trip by truck only 3 hours at night, no cranes involved and delivery right on track at Kawasaki.

How do they get from Kawasaki (Yonkers?) onto system? I remember Noel saying at one point they got into the IRT system at 180th St (the old NYW&B connection of Harlem River /Hell Gate line), but that's long gone.

I know it goes by truck. If you're on South Broadway in Yonkers midnightish most nights, you're sure to see a NYC subway car on a flatbed truck with escort cars. Kawasaki is trying to deliver 1 car a day of the current R160(?) order.

I'm not sure where they are delivered to, though.

If they're coming from Lincoln Nebraska, it's probobly by rail car. If initial assembly was in Japan then they are coming off of RO-RO ships. They are shipped on the trailers in ROll on ROll off ships. (Hence RO-R0)

I don't know if this answers the question, but new cars come into the system via flatbed trailer trucks thru the back of 207YD near a storage lot at Kingsbridge Bus Depot and a NY Dept. of Sanitation garage.
