Check out this excellent site by Peter Dawes. A real labour of love for rail travel. Volumes of trip reports, consists, photos, schedules and ads.

It starts in the ‘50s with travel on CN and CP then expands to trips on Amtrak and VIA. (He’s up to Volume 5 now: the early 1980's.
