Over on the NJ State forum is a question about Nellie Bly operations out of NY and JC. Specifically, which terminal did it leave from with the through cars, and, therfore, where was power (locomotive) change, was there a reverse move at Trenton? Etc. Only a condensed, Official Guide timetable from 1958 and an employee timetable entry from 1960 have been produced, neither answering any questions. Both indicate the Nellie Bly left from NYP but also showed the train leaving from Exchange Place. Nowhere does it indicate a change of trains (most likely Newark) for either departure. There has been the fact that there is a picture someplace purporting to be the Nellie Bly behind a K4 with and engineer having just taken over the train at Trenton (I saw that pic many years ago). It would be logical that the train left NYP and changed power at Trenton. It would also be logical that it could have departed Exchange Place with either diesel or steam and not chang power. Where are the answers? If you got any, join the fray over at the railroad.net NewJersey forum!

They don't show the train leaving from Exchange Place-- just the H&M connection, from the H&M station. Look at the footnote.

The public timetable shows the H&M arrival time at Newark.

Prior to the building of NYP and the North and East River tunnels, the Nellie Bly ran from Exchange Place. After that most likely ran direct from NYP, with a connecting train or H&M coming from Exchange Place.

What the 1958 Official Guide actually shows for the daily-except-Sunday-and-holidays Nellie Bly is

Lv NY Penn 1:15
Lv Hudson Terminal 1:00
Lv Ex. Place 1:03 (footnote says H&M station-- as if it could be anything else, leaving three minutes after the departure from Hudson Terminal)

Arr Newark 1:20
Lv Newark 1:30
Elizabeth 1:38
New Br 1:55
Pr Jct 2:11
Trenton Arr 2:21 lv 2:25

Until about 1962, there were still a few trains from Exchange Place that didn't have the footnote, since they departed from the PRR station upstairs! Since Tube trains to Newark had Keystones on them and accepted PRR tickets, a through passenger from Hudson Terminal might have had a choice of where to transfer.
The arrival at Newark only 5 minutes after leaving Penn Station, New York must be for the connecting H & M train.
