US Army Whitcomb Diesels on the Subway?

-I have seen pictures of these engines used on work trains for the NYC TA. Anyone recall any details, when used, where stationed, duties?
If anyone drove them, what were they like?

One served the South Brooklyn for a while, before departing for SIRT, as its #9. It sat in Clifton Shops for years, and was ultimately transferred to the Kingston NY Trolley Museum, where it currently resides:
