Hi All,
A good buddy of mine once had an apartment for himself and his family that was a gift from his father-in-law, the owner of the apartment building. It was in Far Rockaway, NY, so the IND subway, elevated at that point, went right by the windows of his apartment. I remember looking out of the window, on the third floor, and waving to the train passengers that were also looking out of their windows. If I opened the window to the apartment, and the window of the IND was open, we could have slapped hands with the passengers. The train took a curve right at his house. With the window closed, you could still hear the train going by, the house, solid brick building about five stories high, did not budge. But, as he told me, until I have enough money to buy my own house this will do fine, since it is free to me. Took him about three years living there to get the cash for a house downpayment. Can anyone get closer than that ???
