A 66-year-old Highland man escaped injury late Tuesday night when he drove his truck onto a closed rail crossing on River Road.
Police said Raymond Mackey was traveling south on River Road and decided to drive around two large closure signs that prevented him from crossing the CSX railroad tracks, which are under construction near Mariner's Harbor Restaurant.
Mackey's truck became stuck on the tracks as a southbound CSX freight train approached. Mackey managed to get out of the truck before the train hit it at 20 miles per hour, shoving the truck about 40 feet down the tracks into a parked backhoe on the construction site.
The train, carrying 132 cars, was not damaged, but was stopped for about three hours during the investigation.
The accident tied up five other CSX trains in the Milton area.
Mackey was charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated, obstructing highway railroad grade crossing and avoiding a traffic control device, infractions. He was arraigned and released, pending an appearance July 20 in Lloyd Town Court.
