Some decades ago there was a pedestrian tunnel between the lower level of Pennsylvania Station and the PATH 33rd street station. It was very convenient—especially in bad weather. Why was it closed? Does it still exist?

I do not know who owned the tunnel under the sidewalk on the south side of Gimbels or who was responsible for policing or cleaning it. However, when I encoutered human diarrhea-style feces splattered against the tiled wall, I changed my route to the street.
