All this talk of the B-units got me to thinking: how many GP-7's are left, whether pure or modified to "GP-7m's" or the like?

If there's an easy webpage, please just shoot me the link.

Thanks in advance!

Not to be a smart a$$, but is that a real count, or even a good approximation?

You are not being a smart a$$, that was a wild untamed guess.

You might have to fish a little, but try this one out........ http://www.trainweb.org/emdloco/

Me likes to fish...

Still looking to find what's around. For whatever it's worth, my father and I might be interested in finding one to purchase....

For whatever it's worth.

Try this site:

http://www.thedieselshop.us/MPR.html

It has a fairly comprehensive, and fairly up-to-date, compilation of rosters from all over North America. That should give you a good idea of how many GP7s there are, and where they are.

I think the number of GP7s is perhaps somewhere in the neighborhood of 225-250. That's an estimate, based on looking at each of the rosters on The Diesel Shop web site and counting all of the GP7s.

Here is a quick and dirty tally:

BNSF - 57
CP - 17
ST - 2
MMA - 4
IMRL - 1
IAIS - 1
AR - 1
ACWR - 1
ACRR - 2
BDRV - 1
BOP - 1
BB - 1
CAGY - 12
CFW - 1
CCCR - 2
CBNS - 2
CCT - 1
CHR - 1
DAIR - 1
EIRR - 4
FMRC - 3
FCEN - 2
GNW - 1
GEXR - 2
GITM - 2
INPR - 2
IR - 2
INE - 4
LNW - 1
NC - 3
NBE - 1
NPR - 2
NOW - 1
OT - 1
PHL - 1
QCR - 1
RLIX - 2
SQVR - 1
SRR - 1
SRY - 1
VR - 1
VCY - 1
WTLR - 3
WSOR - 2
WTJR - 7
YSLR - 3
IBCX - 6
BDLX - 4
ILSX - 3
NREX - 9
OMLX - 10
PREX - 5

There are probably dozens more that aren't on that list, belonging to tourist roads, tiny shortlines, and the like... Conway Scenic, Hobo, and Naugatuck immediately come to mind, just based on the ones I'm aware of in New England.

Still... 200+ isn't bad at all, considering how old these beasts are. And that's not counting the ones that were upgraded to GP8/9/10/11 status.

The 2 shown for NP would probably be included in BNSF's 57.

"NP" is Northern Plains Railroad, a shortline. I don't know if that's their actual AAR reporting mark or not. I had to guess on some of them.

OK. I show their reporting marks as NPR. Never heard of them.

There were a couple of NP GP-7's upgraded to GP10's but they are off the roster. We still have a handful of ex-GN GP7's that are GP10's.
