Another interesting pantograph question: Why do the newer cars have a 12" tall platform the pantograph sits on, while every other MU I've ever seen (Pullmans, metra, skokie swift, septa...) has the pantograph sit directly on the roof

I noticed that too, when the 1982 fleet came into service. My best guess is the single-arm pans don't reach as high as the diamond pans on the 1926 fleet, hence the 12" platform.

LJL061 is correct. The "new" cars are not as tall as the orange cars.
