Well, I guess we've all seen how Republicans and Conservatives in general have completely abandoned high speed rail in this country. They are taking their cues from the Bush administration's opposition to Amtrak and Florida Gov Jeb Bush's opposition to HSR in that state. It's no wonder activity on this forum has dropped to next to nothing. It's quite depressing, really.

What, if anything, has anyone heard from the Liberal Democrats (Specifically the Kerry campaign) about their support or opposition to this issue? :(

Nothing from either party, really. You'd think that the fact that South Korea has HSR would have spurred the USA into some kind of action, but nothing doing. Both political parties seem to be hell-bent on keeping us squarely behind the times.

Our only hope for getting real HSR in this country, sorry to say, would be to join the EU...

Nope, the interstates will just keep widening until they are wider than they are long and the U.S. closely resembles a parking lot :P . Sorry to say that it's our culture that needs adjusting, as noted before on the forums. Americans are married to their cars, and no matter how much gridlock they get into, they will remain ignorant or in denial of the benefits of HSR.
