Given that removal of the D&MM trackage from Mount Morris-Groveland-Dansville is a 100%-certainty, efforts should be started to encourage
adaptive re-use of the line between Mount Morris and Wayland,
over fabled Dansville Hill, as a RAIL TRAIL. The Town of North
Dansville shot this down 5-0 about 7 years ago, and no one has
tried since...despite a lot of supporters in Dansville. Routing follows
the former DL&W main line all the way from Mount Morris to Wayland,
where the old passenger station still stands adjoining the Gunlocke
Chair factory. The D&MM itself abandoned ito own line from Mount
Morris to Groveland awhile ago, and its own line between there and
Dansville (at the bottom of the hill; rather than cut way-up along the
ridge south of town) is relatively unscenic and not worth a large
preservation effort. Best target is the "GENESEE VALLEY GREENWAY",
which is already rehabbing the entire ex-PRR Rochester-Cuba branch
into one of the longest rail trails in the NE USA.
