Here are some new old photos I have just put up to the net:

We start with some rare views of the dirt train that ran to Wayne, NJ back in 1995 to take dirt removed from Wayne as part of a wetlands reclamation project to Liberty State Park.
CR 6010 and 6008 back a cut of cars into the loading tracks

CR 6010 backs the second cut of cars into the loading tracks. The fill that the train is running on was put in temporarily for thie project and was removed when the project was completed. Today you cannot even tell the fill or the tracks were in the area.

The project was in Wayne to reclaim wetlands destroyed by the construction of I-287. The dirt removed was taken to Liberty State Park. I dont know what they did with the dirt there.

The dirt was supposed to be used for a new golf course within Liberty State Park, but I did think it was ever built.

Additionally, they never took out as much dirt as they were supposed to by train, and much of it was trucked out near the end of the project. Not sure where the trucked dirt went.

So if tracks were laid in wayne to get dirt out where did they run the tracks off of? NJT line?

Just east of the bridge over the Pompton River and the Lincoln Park / Wayne border. The switch pointed east. This would be west of the location of the former diamond between the Erie Greenwood Lake Branch and the DL&W Boonton Line.

Chris, you have better knowledge of this than most of us... Sorry to go off on a tangent, but wasn't there also another site just east of 287 at the Riverdale exit, along the former Erie Greenwood Lake line? This is on the opposite side of 287 from the stone crushing operation in the quarry. I seem to remember seeing gondolas in there, I thought I read somewhere that this was part of the deal to create / restore a certain number of acres of wetlands after the completion of 287.

RichM,

Yes, the site you are refering to had been a concrete pipe pre-casting factory that at one time was served by the NYS&W. It is between the quarry in Bloomingdale and the Pequannock River. Right under and just east of the Route 287 bridge between Riverdale & Bloomingdale.

The factory was torn down, removed, and then the soil under it was removed to create another wetlands. It had been a good photo spot of NYS&W trains, but trees, and the NYS&W railroad tie graveyard have now grown enough to block the view. This wetlands was created prior to Route 287 being completed in Riverdale.

I don't remember the soil moving out by railcar, as there is enough trucking from the quarries that a few more trucks wouldn't have been noticed. The NIMBY's at the Wayne site didn't want the trucks, so it went by rail.

NYS&W did bid on moving the soil out of the Wayne site too, and supposedly had underbid Conrail, but from what I remember it would have taken the NYS&W a longer time to restore the Greenwwod Lake Branch, and they needed to buy some houses or get agreement with private citizens to get the track into the site. CR had more of a straight shot.

Thanks as always. I remember seeing the gondolas in there after 287 was completed, but perhaps rather than hauling dirt away they were dropping ties in.

I think I'm confusing my memories... at the time of completion of 287, wasn't there some additional requirement by DEP/EPA to expand the wetlands designated land? I think that's why, driving by, I thought there was a site excavation going on there... OK, the horse is dead, I'll put the whip away.
