I have a question about the Musconetcong Gorge in Holland Township, New Jersey:

Does the Highlands Trail go through the Musconetcong Gorge?

A mile and a half section of the Highlands Trail follows the white trail in the gorge section of Musconetcong Reservation.

Are these trails former railroads?

Along the river there is a former branch of the Lehigh Valley that served a paper mill. The Highlands Trail uses a short section of the ROW, then ascends the mountain.

If you want an old rail bed for a trail in the mountains, Paulinskill Trail is excellent for that purpose. Although not an official trail, the Cutoff also is a good hike this time of year.
