New Jersey Transit's board yesterday authorized a $250 million contract for initial construction elements of the Raritan River Bridge replacement project in New Jersey, and a $4.1 million contract for preliminary design of the central concourse extension at Penn Station in New York City.
The board approved a contract with George Harms Construction Co. Inc. to construct bridge approach spans, lift bridge and flanking spans piers and perform associated land work for the first phase of construction of the Raritan River bridge replacement project.

The existing bridge sustained significant damage during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The bridge replacement will occur in three phases and cost $595 million to complete.
