The Maryland Department of Transportation said it has reached an agreement with Virginia for the potential future expansion of MARC to Alexandria.
Major infrastructure projects need to be completed before MARC trains could expand to Virginia, mainly the Long Bridge expansion and creation of a four-track system between the District and Virginia. Maryland officials said that operating and access agreements also would need to be renegotiated with CSX and Amtrak.
In the short-term, Maryland and Virginia are exploring the possibility of honoring each other’s fare tickets and aligning schedules between MARC and Virginia Railway Express to make transfers more convenient for riders.
VRE will build a new L'Enfant Plaza and Crystal City station that would have double plaforms
